Uab School of Dentistry Continuing Education
Course Credit
All participants are provided an official letter of attendance which will be emailed after the course. This document is acceptable by the Alabama Board of Dental Examiners as proof of attendance to the course. Continuing Education credits awarded for participation in the CE activity may not apply toward license renewal. It is the responsibility of each participant to verify the requirements of his/her state licensure board(s).
The University of Alabama at Birmingham is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. 05/01/22-06/30/26
ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry.
The formal continuing education programs of the UAB School of Dentistry are accepted by the AGD for Fellowship/Mastership credit. The current term of acceptance extends from 05/01/22-06/30/26.
Registration Policy
UAB Department of Continuing Dental Education provides participants access to online registration at www.dental.uab.edu. Pre-registration for all courses is necessary. UAB CE reserves the right to end registration when the enrollment limit has been reached or to cancel a course due to lack of enrollment. Course confirmation and updates are sent via email.
We reserve the right to change or cancel program offerings without notice. If a significant change occurs, every effort will be made to notify registered participants.

Fees
The price of your course includes tuition, course materials, and coffee breaks (when applicable). Lunch is on your own unless otherwise noted. If lunch is offered and you have special dietary needs, please call (205) 934-3753 at least five business days before the start of the course to inform us of your dietary requirements.
See individual course descriptions for tuition fees. Tuition must be paid in full at the time of registration unless otherwise noted. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and checks.
Location
Unless otherwise indicated, all courses are held at UAB School of Dentistry at 1919 7th Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama. Program confirmation emails will include building and room information.
Although every effort is made to have a comfortable temperature in the meeting room, we realize everyone's comfort zone is different. Please bring a jacket or light wrap in case the room is too cool for your comfort.
Due to COVID protocols, we have extended our class offerings to include more virtual CE courses provided via Zoom. We are excited to be partnering with the Association for Continuing Dental Education (ACDE) and 31 University partner CE programs from accredited dental schools in Canada and the United States to offer high quality, evidence-based continuing dental education programs to meet your educational needs.
We are also committed to providing hybrid CE programs, when possible, to allow you to choose whether to attend in person or virtually.
Please also consider participating in one of our self-instructional course offerings.
On-Site Check-In
Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the course to check in and pick up handouts. Signs in the UAB School of Dentistry first floor lobby will list room numbers for the courses. Same day walk-in enrollments will be accommodated on a space-available basis.
Refund Policy
If you must cancel your registration, please notify the Continuing Dental Education Department as soon as you determine you are unable to attend. Full refunds of tuition less a 10% processing fee will be provided for cancellations up to 7 business days prior to a lecture course and 21 business days prior to a participation or limited attendance course. For cancellations made after that time, the attendee may apply the entire tuition to a future course. Tuition for no-shows will be forfeited. Select courses may have individually specific cancellation fees and policies. These policies will be listed in the print materials (brochures, flyers, etc.) and on the individual course Web page.
UAB CDE will assess a $50 fee for all returned payments. Returned payments include returned checks and dishonored credit or debit card payments.
Course Cancellation Policy
UAB Continuing Dental Education reserves the right to cancel any course, limit enrollment, modify the announced course content, or change the location, time, date, and faculty of any course as may be deemed necessary or advisable. We encourage you to register early. This will enable us to protect course enrollment and avoid an unnecessary cancellation of a course. In the event that the School of Dentistry feels it is necessary to cancel a program, a full refund of the tuition will be granted. Attempts to contact all registrants will be made at the time cancellation is determined. UAB Continuing Dental Education Programs cannot be responsible for the costs of travel or lodging as a result of unforeseen circumstances or events beyond its control.
Weather Emergencies
Occasionally the Birmingham area experiences bad weather with snow and ice on the roads making it difficult for employees and participants to get to UAB. Please check your email for an update and/or call the CE office at 205-934-3753 for a prerecorded message regarding the scheduled course. You may also call 205-934-2165 and select option 2 for a prerecorded message about the University's status. If UAB is closed, all CDE courses scheduled on campus will be canceled and rescheduled. Please call the CE office to confirm the schedule of any off campus offering.
Special Needs & Considerations
The UAB School of Dentistry Continuing Dental Education Department complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

New Knowledge Disclosure
Dental educational institutions have an obligation to disseminate new knowledge related to dental practice. In so doing, some presentations may include controversial materials of commercial references. Participants are cautioned about the potential risks of using limited knowledge when incorporating techniques and procedures into their practices, especially when the course has not provided them with supervised clinical experience in the technique or procedure to ensure that they have attained competence. Sponsorship or partial sponsorship of a continuing education course by the UAB School of Dentistry does not necessarily imply endorsement of a particular philosophy, procedure, or product.
Continuing education courses do not necessarily reflect the philosophies of the postdoctoral or postdoctoral training programs. Sponsorship of a continuing education course by the UAB School of Dentistry does not imply subject matter, product, or technique endorsement. Courses may include subject matter of an experimental and/or controversial nature. This material is offered to the profession for educational and informational purposes in a spirit of academic freedom.

Conflict of Interest Policy
Commercial fiscal support can contribute significantly to the quality of certain continuing education activities. A conflict of interest may be considered to exist if a continuing education program speaker is affiliated with or has financial interest in any organization(s) that may have a direct interest in the subject matter of the presentation. When such situation occurs, the audience must be made aware of the affiliation/financial interest via an acknowledgement in the faculty listing in program materials. UAB School of Dentistry has adopted a policy to provide guidelines for the use of commercial support in continuing education programs.
Scientific Evidence Policy
The UAB CE Department will provide oversight to ensure that educational content is evidence-based, references best practices that are supported by peer reviewed published articles and guidelines, and is free of commercial bias.
The UAB CE Department is responsible for ensuring that clinical and technical continuing education activities have a sound scientific basis and proven clinical efficacy in order to promote public safety.
Speakers must support clinical recommendations based on scientific evidence that is available as well as present risks and benefits associated with the material presented.
It is the responsibility of the UAB CE Department, as well as the speaker, to caution participants about the potential risks of using limited knowledge when integrating new techniques and/or technologies into their practice. This caution is also listed on each Verification of Participation letter.
Speakers must attest that the images used in the CE activity have not been falsified to misrepresent treatment outcomes.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) states that patient records and photos used in teaching must be stripped of all "direct identifiers" such as name, address, social security number, patient ID number, identifiable photographic images, etc. or that you have written authorization from the patient to use his/her directly identifiable health information in this way. This program requires presenters participating in an UAB CE event to verify that the presentation materials meet these HIPAA standards. Presentation materials include, but are not limited to, handouts, slides, PowerPoint presentations, videos and reproductions of journal articles.
Privacy Policy
Access to your personal information is strictly controlled by a limited number of Continuing Dental Education staff. Staff are required to keep participants' personal information confidential and to use that information only to carry out services on behalf of the UAB Office of Continuing Education such as to contact you regarding your registration or about upcoming events.
Record Keeping/Attendance Policy
The UAB Department of Continuing Dental Education will maintain program attendance information for continuing education credit for no more than seven years from the date of the course. It is up to participants to maintain their own records and for reporting their CDE activities to all appropriate bodies for licensing or membership requirements. Calculation of CE Credit
CE credit will be issued based on the following and in accordance with the participant's actual time attending the course:
- For all CE activities, 0.25 credit hours will be awarded for each 15 minutes of activity time, not including breaks, meals, registration periods or general business. No credit shall be awarded if the activity is less than 15 minutes in duration. Participants who leave course activities early will have their CE hours adjusted to reflect their attendance.
- For CDE activities that involve both on-site lecture and demonstration portions and in-office, independent participation components, credit for the in-office, independent study portion may not exceed credit awarded for the lecture and demonstration portions.
- For participation in audio or audiovisual self-instructional programs, credit must be awarded based on the actual length of the audiovisual instructional time plus a good faith estimate of the time it takes an average participant to complete all required elements of the activity, including the self-assessment mechanism.
- Audio visual self-instructional activities include, but are not limited to:
- Audio- or audio-visual activities delivered via CD, DVD, pod cast, on-line, etc.
- Multi-media activities comprised of audiovisual elements in combination with written materials.
- For participation in self-paced self-instructional programs, the provider must award credit based on a good faith estimate of the time it takes an average participant to complete the program. Self-paced self-instructional activities include, but are not limited to, written self-study activities such as journals or monographs, either print-based or electronically mediated.
The Fine Print
Speakers must disclose any relevant financial interests or other relationships with manufacturers of any commercial products or providers of commercial services that are discussed in any continuing education program. Unless otherwise stated, there is no commercial support for continuing education programs at UAB School of Dentistry.
Be advised of the potential risk of using limited knowledge when incorporating new techniques and procedures into your practice, especially when the program has not provided you with supervised clinical experience in the technique or procedure to ensure that you have attained competency.
By registering in any UAB School of Dentistry Continuing Education program, you explicitly grant permission for photographs and video of you to be taken at the event and used in UAB School of Dentistry publications and communications.
